To qualify for this tournament one must be at least 55 years of age. The 69-year-old Stan Wade has played great golf this season and shot another superb round on this occasion. He was only one stroke over par with three holes to go when his concentration began to slip and he finished four over. He was still able to win easily. Congratulations to these four top senior players.
Wawenock’s Men’s Evening League closed out the 2010 season on Sept. 1 with Team Micholson defeating Team Stricker for top honors and Team Furyk defeating Team Westwood for third place. The fifth place team (Donald) and the sixth place team (Woods) chose to sit out golf on this steamy, hot evening. These fierce competitors sat on the shady porch of the old clubhouse, and talked about what might have been over some cold liquid refreshments.
This year’s championship team consisted of Kyle Feltis, Barry Knott, Mike Hall, Ken Steele, Greg Bolster and Leo Corson. Leo was unable to play due to health reasons so his spot was filled by one of our many subs. This week old friend and past president of the Club, Tom Finn, filled in admirably. Congratulations to the winners and better luck next year to all of the also rans.
We want to give a big thank you to Nick Waltz for running our evening league. Thanks also to the Reunion Station Fairway Restaurant for all of the delicious dinners and refreshing cold drinks and for listening, as we relived our victories or tried to justify our defeats. You helped make it a very social experience and enjoyable for every level of golfer
I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of our members to get involved next season with one of our leagues. The ladies play on Monday evenings and Thursday mornings, and the men play on Wednesday mornings and evenings. The leagues provide a great way to meet and play with other members, and the competition is truly sociable and enjoyable. Just ask anyone playing in our leagues! (Thanks, Chris.)
All, who were not involved in the championship, played a mini tournament with Curt Mason winning.
Doug Merrick, our league president for several years, announced his retirement from this role. Doug has been an excellent president and all of the members of the league wish to thank him for his leadership. Our new president, who was elected by acclamation, is that “Hole-in-One guy”, John Hanna. We were happy to learn that our super stat man, Joe McDermott, will be continuing in his role next year.
A couple of weeks ago Bill Babcock, while finishing his nine hole round during the Wednesday Morning League play hit a ball out of the rough. Unfortunately it turned out not to be his ball. Not one of us, who were with him, knew that this had happened. Bill penalized himself two strokes for that violation of the rules and that is what golf, as a game of honor, is all about. My hat’s off to Bill! In a perfect world everyone knows the rules and everyone is honor bound-like Bill.
First place honors went to the team of Traci Beier, Robin Whitney, Tracy Babcock, and Joanne Sharpe with a score of 36. Second place honors were awarded to the team of Linda Cosgrove, Alex Whitney, and Stephanie Russell with a score of 38. After play, the league held the final dinner at the Fairway Restaurant and received the prizes won during the season.
