Lincoln Academy boys and girls soccer teams were presented 2013 Sportsmanship awards Friday night. Todd Underwood, president of the Midcoast Board of Officials, said it is very rare for two teams from the same school to receive the Sportsmanship honors. He has seen it just one other time (Medomak Valley).
The board covers 17 high schools and more than 60 schools in all, located from Freeport to Belfast.
The 50-member board of officials vote based on the behavior of the athletes, coaches, fans and administration. “Basically it is on how things are handled during a game,” Underwood said.
The girls soccer team were presented with the Willy Walter Memorial Sportsmanship banner, and the boys soccer team the Phil Marcoux Memorial Sportsmanship banner. In addition, the coaching staffs were presented plaques.
