Second seed Falmouth (9-3-2) clipped the Eagles’ wings 3-0 in the West Class B quarterfinals under the lights in Falmouth on Oct. 26. Lincoln was seeded seventh going into the match-up with a 6-6-3 record.
The Yachtsmen put on a passing clinic, making good use of back passes, long crossing passes and their speed to advance to the West B semifinals.
Falmouth took a 1-0 lead on the first shot of the night, two and a half minutes into the contest. Brandon Tuttle converted a Grant Burfiend corner kick to give the Yachtsmen the lead.
Lincoln Academy senior goalkeeper Merritt Wotton was on the top of his game, rejecting 11 1st half shots to keep the Eagles within striking distance. Ryan Peters made a goal line save with Wotton out of the net after blocking a shot.
Lincoln mustered just two shots in the period. Tom Masters had the first from the right side, and Nic Phinney the second on a rocket with two minutes to play. Will D’Agostino stopped both of them. Falmouth led 1-0 at the half.
In a repeat of the 1st half, Falmouth found net on the first shot of the 2nd half. Burfiend collected a long crossing pass from the right side, dribbled in from the left wing and put a shot off the right post a minute into the period.
Lincoln had three shots in the 2nd frame. Michael McCormick had the only shot on net. Brandon Bonney hit the side of the net with six minutes to play when he found himself open on the left side.
Wotton made several key saves to keep the Eagles in the game, including stopping two breakaway shots from point blank range.
Falmouth’s Tuttle scored his second goal of the night with 3:20 to go on a breakaway. Tuttle bounced off a couple of defenders before teeing up on Wotton.
Falmouth held a 34-5 edge in shots. Wotton made 25 saves for the Eagles, and D’Agostino three stops for the Yachtsmen.
