Second seed Waynflete defeated seventh seed Wiscasset (6-5-3) Oct. 26 in the West Class C boys’ soccer quarterfinals.
The Portland inner city school played a physical game, with a lot of body contact, grabbing and holding, a style of play the young Wolverines were unaccustomed to.
Ironically, Wiscasset drew two yellow cards, and the much more aggressive Waynflete team did not receive a single one.
Waynflete took a 2-0 lead in the 1st half. Mitch Newlin scored on a scramble 17 minutes into the contest. Defender Eddie Stewart was out of the game, after getting kicked in the midsection less than a minute earlier.
Max McKendry made it 2-0 with 11:47 to play in the 1st period. Flyer freshman Clancy Mitchell gave Waynflete a 3-0 win when he put in rebounded shot in the 2nd half.
The Flyers out shot Wiscasset 24 to 10. Jason Weatherbee made seven 1st half saves and freshman Dylan MacMahan 10 2nd half saves.
Zander Majerick made eight saves in net for the Flyers.
