Three Alna brothers, Johnathan, Jesse and Jason Hinman, organized the Wiscasset 5K on Saturday to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The young men raised about $2000 for JDRF. Fifty-six runners, and more than a dozen walkers showed up to support the cause.
“We are very pleased with the turnout,” Jason said. “For a first year 5K, it did very well. After the race, everyone had good things to say about the course.” The Hinmans are hoping to make the 5K a yearly event.
Two of the three brothers have juvenile diabetes. Jesse was diagnosed in the third grade and Jason his junior year at Wiscasset High School. All three brothers graduated from Wiscasset and went on to the University of Maine Orono, where Johnathan is a recent graduate.
The Hinmans dedicated the race to recently retired veterinarian Dr. James Wahlstrom, from Coastal Community Veterinary Services and Boothbay Animal Hospital, whose “workplace pitched in to help,” Jason Hinman said.
Wahlstrom’s granddaughter, Hanna Carroll, has juvenile diabetes, and attended the race with her grandparents.
The Hinmans had several former WHS classmates turn out for the event, including a group of four young men that called themselves the Wolfpack. One member of the pack, Dan Averill, lost 17 pounds in six weeks while training for the race.
Rufus Williams, 52, was the race winner in 19:01. Alexandra Horst was the top female finisher, taking 8th overall in 20:25. Of special note is Colin McKellar, 14, who finished 2nd in 19:14.
