Leavitt girls’ soccer team defended their home turf on Friday for a 2-1 win over Medomak Valley in the two teams’ KVAC season opener. The Panthers arrived late to the field due to an accident on Rt. 17 in Chelsea.
“It was pretty much even-steven. We had some really good chances. We took our shots a little too early or high or wide. We dominated play in the 2nd half. We controlled 30 out of the 40 minutes. We were controlling play. We had them on the ropes,” coach Larry Jensen said.
K. Marshall gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. Medomak tied the score with 12 minutes remaining in the 2nd half. Emily Leach crossed the ball to Alanna Vose, who one touched it in from 16 yards out.
Leavitt scored the game winner with 26 seconds to go. T. Sierra came off the bench to score the game winner. Leavitt was resting their starter for a potential overtime. Leavitt “beat our halfback and fullback,” Jensen said.
Keeper Amanda Hendrickson-Belloguet was where she should have been, she cut the angle down and was at the post. Leavitt took a shot from eight yards out, and bounced it off H-Belloguet’s face. The ball then bounced off the post, ran along the cross bar to the far side and Sierra walked it in,” Jensen said.
“I was really pleased with how the kids played. The 2nd half they played hard enough to win, we just didn’t get the bounces. Overall we did a nice job,” Jensen added.
Medomak held a 22-17 advantage in shots. H-Belloguet made 12 saves.
