Golfers from all over the state descended on Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro Oct. 16 to compete in the State Class A, B & C individual golf championships. Weather conditions were horrendous, with cold rain and wind.
“Conditions were awful,” Wiscasset coach Tim Flanagan said. Only 10 golfers broke 80 on the day, two of them were from Lincoln County.
Wiscasset’s Jordan Jones shot a 75 to tie for second in Class C with Ian Gervais of Houlton. Seth Sweet of Madison was crowned the State C champ with a 73. Jones shot a 40 on the back nine and 35 on the front in the afternoon when weather conditions improved.
Lincoln Academy freshman Seward Matel was the Class B runner-up with a 78. Matel shot a 37 on the front half and a 41 on the back. Greg Martin of Ellsworth shot a 77 to earn the state title. Malcolm Oliver medalled with an 83 and tied for 10th. Kelsey Leeman competed in the Girls’ All Classes State championship. Leeman shot a 107.
“She did not have a good day,” said Lincoln Academy coach Todd Brackett.
Medomak Valley junior Zach Judkins shot an 89 to tie for 19th. Judkins qualified with an 84.
“I was absolutely pleased with his score under those conditions. It was windy and it started in the rain. That would add seven or eight strokes to anybody’s score in those conditions,” Medomak coach Peter Stuart said. “Zach was only three over, going into the 9th hole. He had a little bit of trouble on the ninth. He shot a 46 on the back. I’m proud of him, he did a great job. He is probably my most improved player of the year.”
