Lincoln Academy boys’ soccer coach KJ Anastasio said the team is working hard not to be tagged as a re-building year. The Eagles graduated nine and had three players not return to the program from last year’s team that went 9-5 and were seeded fifth in West Class B. With a re-loading attitude, Lincoln is “progressing nicely. They are working hard,” Anastasio added.
The Eagles lost their first two pre-season games to Morse and Messalonskee, but turned things around with a 1-0 win over Cony and 2-0 win over Hall-Dale this past week.
“Sam Stone is a natural leader,” Anastasio said of one of his captains.
Captain Kyle Scherer returns for his third varsity season in goal for the Eagles. “He is very solid in net,” Anastasio added.
The Bonney brothers, Brandon and Jacob are also captains on the squad. “They are both playing well and bring skills to the team that are desperately needed,” Anastasio said. Jacob Barrows returns after a year away. “He has bolstered up the midfield,” Anastasio said of Barrows’ physical and tactical play.
Team members include Kyle Scherer, John Riley, Jan Taliento, Jacob Maxmin, Jeff Cheney, Bo McLain, Sam Stone, Tom Masters, Jacob Barrows, Brandon Bonney, Liam Mullen, Jackson Cromwell, Ryan Wahle, Ryan Peters, Josh Cross, Jacob Bonney, Kyle O’Brien, Ben Stone, and Nic Phinney.
Lincoln Academy boys open their season on Fri., Sept. 3 at Winslow. Their home opener is Wed., Sept. 8 against Rockland at 5 p.m.
