Lincoln Academy’s new head softball coach Katie Mainville beams with positive energy. The attitude is contagious and the Lady Eagles enter the 2010 season with a determined and positive outlook.
Mainville is keeping 12 on the varsity roster and swinging a couple of players. Twenty-three athletes came out for softball. While Mainville said she “wishes it was more,” she is happy to be able to field two teams.
“They are working really hard. They are learning a lot, which is good. They are a bunch of great athletes. I am impressed with them and their work ethic. Their attitudes are good. They all seem really positive, willing to work hard and willing to learn. They are athletic and have the ability to be better than a .500 team,” Mainville said.
“Our goal is to have a better record than last year (6-10, 12th seed West B, no playoffs). Hopefully they will be better than a .500 team. They have the capability and athleticism to be better,” Mainville said.
Team members include seniors Kassie Lincoln (back up pitcher), Stephanie Oliver (center field), and Allison Hazeltine; juniors Amelia Pennington (starting pitcher), Katherine Bolster, Marni Jones (catcher), Anna Budrow (3rd base), Olivia Osbourne, Kiana Santos and Laura Soohey (1st base); sophomore Morgan Scavetta; and freshman Shania Creamer. Tara Gauntt will swing as a relief pitcher. Mainville said second base, shortstop, and left and right field positions are still up in the air.
Lincoln, Oliver and Pennington are tri-captains for the 2010 team. Starting pitcher “Amelia (Pennington) is working really hard. You can tell she likes the game. The kids like to win, and that’s what I like to see,” Mainville added.
Lincoln opens their season home against East B defending champs Medomak Valley on Fri., April 23 at 1 p.m.
