Lincoln Academy girls’ basketball team held off the Black Bears at home Tuesday night to pick up their first win of the season, 39-36.
The Eagles posted the first 10 points on the board, and led 10-3 at the quarter, 22-9 at the half, and 26-18 at the end of three. Maranacook challenged the Eagles in second-half action, pulling within four, but were not able to take the lead. Ashley Michaud hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to play to cut the lead to three.
Marni Jones came up big at the foul line in the fourth quarter, sinking six of 10 attempts, and Katherine Bolster added two foul shots, and Laura Soohey and Merissa Look added a basket each in the final stanza.
Senior Laura Soohey had a big night for the Eagles, scoring 12 points and ripping down 16 rebounds and blocking five shots. Also scoring for Lincoln were Katherine Bolster 16 (4R), Marni Jones 6 93A), Merissa Look 5 (2S) and Kelsey Schwarz 1 (6R,1B,1S). Scoring for Maranacook were Mariah Vining 12 (4-3’s), Katie Dore 7, Hannah Clough 6, Hanna Cumler 5, Kristina Kelly 2 and Nicole Smith 1.
The Hornets jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead and extended it to 36-15 at the half and 54-30 at the end of three. “They are a really good team. They are quick and they just pressed and pressed and pressed,” LA coach Conrad Lewis said. “The only team I see beating them is York (defending State champs). I think Leavitt will go a long way. They’re not big, but they are fast and have a great press.”
Scoring for the Eagles were Katherine Bolster with a career high 25 points (14 for 18 from the line), Merissa Look 8, Laura Soohey 6, Marni Jones 2 and Kelsey Schwarz 2. Scoring for Leavitt were Courtney Anderson 23 (11 in 4th quarter), Adrianna Newton 18, Kristen Anderson 16, Amanda Jordan 8, Jenna Cole 6, Abby Randall 6 and Sarah Frost 2.
