Medomak Valley trailed most of the game, before rallying in the 4th quarter to beat county rivals Lincoln Academy 54-52 Friday night in Waldoboro. Alex MacKenzie scored 10 of his game high 20 points in the 4th quarter, including seven in the first three minutes of play to recapture the lead for the Panthers.
The Eagles were tagged for 26 fouls in the game, to Medomak’s 11. Lincoln made 7 of 8 foul shots, and Medomak made 14 of 30.
Medomak took a 4-2 lead in the 1st, before Lincoln went on a 9-2 run to end the quarter with an 11-6 lead. Andrew Feltis hit a three, and Kyle Scherer, Ethan Wajer and Cameron Dodge scored in the rally.
Reilly opened the 2nd frame with a three-point play to put the Eagles up by eight. Lincoln opened up an 11 point lead when Wajer scored off his own steal and Everett Martin went inside on a Ben McLain pass. Medomak ended the half with a 6-2 run, led by MacKenzie, to go into the half trailing 22-15.
Reilly opened the 3rd with a three-point play to put the Eagles up by 10. The Panthers scored eight straight points in the middle of the frame to cut the lead to two. Isaac Durkee and Dustin Osier scored and MacKenzie and Isaac Greenrose converted off the glass in the rally. Martin fed McLain on two baskets, including a three-pointer to give Lincoln a seven point lead.
Osier scored for the Panthers. Feltis hit a hoop and Wajer two foul shots for the Eagles for an eight point lead. Medomak scored the final four points of the quarter on an Alex Greenrose foul shot and Isaac Greenrose 3-pointer to cut the lead to five, 36-31, going into the final period.
The Panthers opened the final period with a 12-2 run to take the lead for good. I. Greenrose netted five points, including a 3-pointer, and MacKenzie seven points in the rally. Twice Medomak extended their lead to six. John Bartlett scored off the glass to put Medomak up 45-39. Pat Mullin hit a three for the Eagles, MacKenzie scored at the line for the Panthers, and McLain converted off the glass to cut the lead to two, 48-46.
MacKenzie and Wajer exchanged baskets, before Medomak settled four of eight foul shots to go back up by six with 30 seconds to go. McLain hit a three to cut the lead to three. I. Greenrose scored one at the line, before Wajer scored a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one with nine seconds to play. Jason Vinal was fouled on a three point attempt with three seconds to go to put Medomak up by two.
Lincoln missed a 3-point attempt with three seconds to play and regained the rebound under the basket, but opted to go for another 3-point attempt, instead of a tying a lay-up as time ran out on their efforts.
Scoring for Medomak were MacKenzie 20 (11R,1S,2A), I. Greenrose 15, Durkee 6 (6R), Osier 4, Bartlett 4 (3R), Vinal 3 (2S), and Dan Aubel 2. Scoring for the Eagles were Wajer 15 (2A), McLain 10 (5R,2S,1B,3A), Mullin 7, Reilly 7 (7R), Feltis 7 (3R,2S,1A), Marin 4 (5R,2S,2A), and Scherer 2.
Everett Martin went down with an ankle injury in the 3rd quarter. “That didn’t help,” coach John Gosselin commented on the loss. Martin is expected to be able to return in a couple of weeks.
Lincoln led 12-9 after one, trailed 29-28 at the half, and trailed 51-36 at the end of three. Ben McLain scored 15 of his career high 20 points in the Eagles’ fourth quarter comeback bid. Also scoring for the Eagles were Ethan Wajer 10, Martin 6, Andrew Feltis 6, Merritt Wotton 5, Brandon Reilly 4, Pat Mullin 3 and Kyle Scherer 2.
