Medomak Valley cheerleaders placed 10th in the State Class B championships, held at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday. The Panthers scored 129.9 points, just three points out of 5th place. Medomak struggled with one pyramid that fell costing them points. “You never wish for a fall,” coach Rachel Coor said.
“We were just happy to be there. It is a step in the right direction for the program. I hope the girls get experience from it and learn from it and come back that much stronger next year,” Coor added of the Panthers competing in the state championships.
“I am so proud of them. It was so unreal to be there for the kids. For senior Jennifer Sykes, that’s all she’s ever wanted. There are some kids on teams that never got that opportunity,” Coor said.
The Panthers fielded a young team, with just three seniors and one junior. “Everyone else will be back. Coor said. Her Lady Panthers need to work on tumbling for next year. “We were a lot of points behind everyone else,” Coor added, although her team met the minimum requirements with the cartwheels they added to their routine this year.
“The tumbling skills need to be started in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Our focus is to get the younger kids to start working on these – that’s our goal.”
“It is only my second year with these guys. We can only go up from there. I am excited about the future. I’m not going to complain about 10th place, it felt good to get there,” Coor added of her squad.
“I have had great support from coaches, athletic director Matt Lash and parents, Coor said.
Poland won the State Class B title with 146.8 points, Ellsworth was 2nd with 145.9, and Hermon 3rd with 141.5.
