Midcoast 13-15 Babe Ruth All-Stars played three games in the State tournament at Westbrook High School last week. Midcoast opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Westbrook on July 21, beat Sanford 11-2 on July 22, then were eliminated by Franklin in another one run loss, 7-6 on July 23.
Midcoast stranded seven base runners in the loss.
After two scoreless innings, Westbrook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd. Kaleb Kent walked, stole second, advanced to third on a Zack Bean single and scored on a Bouchard fielder’s choice.
Midcoast tied the score in the bottom of the 4th. Caleb McFarland hit a line drive double off the left field fence and scored on a Sam Berry single.
Westbrook scored the winning run in the top of the 7th. Bouchard reached on an error and scored on an Alec Hazlewood single.
Hitting for Midcoast were Chandler Longfellow with 2 singles, McFarland and Joe Chamberlain with a double each, and Crans, Berry and Stewart a single each. Hitting for Westbrook were Bean, Collin Joyce and Hazlewood 2 singles each, and Caleb Bourassa a single.
Hitting for Midcoast were Chandler Crans with a triple and 2 singles, Cody Graves a double and single (1RBI), Eddie Stewart 2 singles, Jordan Carter a double, Caleb McFarland a single (1RBI), Joe Chamberlain a single (2RBI), Tim Farrar a single (1RBI), and Nick Judge a single. Sanford was led by Tyler Falyhan with a double and single, and Strickland with 2 singles.
Midcoast’s rally fell short in the top of the 7th with two runs to pull within one. Chamberlain reached on an error and scored on a Stewart single. Stewart moved over on a Crans single and was sacrificed home on a Longfellow fly out. Crans was left stranded.
Relief pitcher Caleb McFarland took the loss (1/3I, 3R, 2H). Sam Berry started and went five innings (4R, 9H, 3K), and Cody Graves pitched the final 2/3 inning (1H).
Hitting for Midcoast were Stewart with a double and single (1RBI), McFarland 2 singles (1RBI), Longfellow 2 singles (2 RBI), Berry a single (2RBI), and Crans a single.
Apple Valley went on to beat Franklin to win the State championship.
