Wally Morris, of Jefferson, helped power Augusta to the State 14-year-old Babe Ruth Tournament.
Augusta beat Apple Valley 6-4, and Somerset County 9-8 in the District 5 playoffs, then lost two games to Central Maine, 14-13 and 8-4. Central Maine hosted the state tournament so automatically went to states, so the second place team Augusta represented D5 in the tournament.
Morris played centerfield and catcher. “His play in centerfield was phenomenal. He got some balls no one else could have got. He kept us in our games in the District playoffs. He batted fourth. He has a big stick. But more than anything else, his defense in centerfield got us to states. In Districts he played a step above the other kids in that position. He is very fast and gets a good jump on the ball,” coach Earl Kingsbury commented.
In the state tournament last week, Augusta lost to Central Maine 7-1, beat Tri-County South 5-2, and lost to Portland 14-4. Morris played in the first game, but sat out the second two with an injury.
