Waterville handed Lincoln Academy baseball a 10-2 loss Friday at Oak Hill to win the KVAC championship. “The mental part of their game was ugly, downright brutal,” coach Greg Rice said on his Eagle squad’s focus.
“Waterville is the defending State B champions for a reason. They will do well in the playoffs,” Rice added.
Starter Alex Cosgrove took the loss in two plus innings (6R, 1K, 5H, 2B). Andy Bartlett (4H, 3R, 2B, 1K) and AJ Oliver (3H, 1R, 2B, 1K) pitched in relief. Tim Locke collected the win (6H, 8K, 1B) in 6 innings of work and Whitten closed out the final inning.
Waterville took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. Kyle Bishop doubled and scored on a throwing error. Tyler Bouchard walked and scored on a Ryan Vellieux double. They added four in the 3rd to take a 6-0 lead. Tim Locke hit an RBI single and Bouchard a three run triple.
After four scoreless innings, the Eagles got on the boards and spoiled Locke’s shutout. Dalton Leeman reached on an error, moved over on a walk to Cosgrove and scored on a Brandon Reilly fielder’s choice. Everett Martin singled, and Cosgrove scored on a throwing error on the play.
Hitting for Lincoln were Reilly and Martin with 2 singles each, and Cosgrove, Kyle Scherer and Mardy Alden a single each. Hitting for Waterville were Vellieux with a double and 2 singles. Bouchard a triple and double, JT Whitten and Aiden Fitzgerald 2 singles each, Bishop a double and Locke and Racean Wood a single each.
