The decision didn’t come easily; it wasn’t until noon Oct. 29 that the folks at Hidden Valley Nature Center listened one more time to the worsening weather forecast and made the call to postpone.
The half marathon race, originally scheduled for Oct. 30, has now been rescheduled for Sun., Nov. 27 at 9 a.m.
Distance racers are a hardy breed who live by the motto, “There is no such things as bad weather, just bad choice of clothing.” If anyone can deal with a foot of wet snow and strong winds, it’s these athletes. However, in the interest of safety, both on the trail and the road, it was agreed to postpone the event.
All 50 available slots had been filled, but because of the new date, there are now some openings. Distance runners are invited to consider signing up for this unique off road experience which will take them 13.1 miles deep into the Maine woods.
The track is challenging and does not repeat itself; the highly varied terrain, slippery roots and loose rocks will demand concentration and sharpened focus.
After the race, hot food and drinks will be served to runners. Prizes include many homemade food items. Thanks go to Trail Monster Running for its great technical support and the dozens of volunteers who have helped with preparations for the last month and were on call for the race itself. The plan is to make this an annual event at HVNC.
Registration fee is $25 (free for HVNC members – join for only $50). All proceeds will support the maintenance of HVNC trails and educational programs. Contact trailmonsterrunning.com, hvnc.org, Gary at 586-6752, gary@hvnc.org, or Chris at 586-5161.
HVNC is a non-profit, community-supported organization promoting environmental education and sustainable forestry at an ecologically diverse, 1000-acre preserve. With over 25 miles of hiking/ski trails that traverse a wide variety of natural habitats, HVNC is perfect for runners who prefer cruising through quiet woods over pounding the pavement. Primitive camping is available throughout the year.
