Medomak Middle School cheerleaders continued their dynasty on Jan. 25 by winning the 2012 Busline League championship on their home court in Waldoboro. The win was the second straight for the Riverhawks, and their fourth in five years.
Each team performed twice, with the two scores averaged to determine placement.
Medomak beat out Great Salt Bay School. Bristol placed third. Boothbay Elementary won the 2012 Busline League Spirit Award. Oceanside also competed.
Medomak scored 56.65, GSB 50.3, Bristol 45.05, Boothbay 42.75, and Oceanside 37.5.
The Lady Riverhawks donned pink t-shirts after performing. When asked what the significance of pink was, one cheerleader responded “pink is awesome” and another that it “was to bring awareness of breast cancer.”
“They performed really well, but not flawless. They were proud of themselves, and I was proud of them. We need to clean it up a bit for States,” Coach Leanne Young said.
Young started working with the team part way through their 2007 season. Her first full season assisting was in 2008. She took over the program in 2009.
The Riverhawks will compete at the Bangor Auditorium on March 10 at the State Jr. High tournament, and hope to defend their 2011 State title.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of them. They exceeded my expectations. This is the closest we’ve ever come to Medomak,” GSB coach Brie Konitzky said.
GSB finished runner-ups to Medomak the past two years. The Cougars will also compete in the State championships in Bangor (10 a.m.).
