Six WCC Unsinkable swimmers qualified for Northeast Regional Zones, including John McLeod, Ross Hanley, Samantha Ober, Jake Stafford, Noah Jordan and Ben Milliken. The Northeast Zones will be held in New York the end of March. Unsinkable head coach Lori LaPointe was chosen to be one of the coaches for the Maine Zone team.
The Bronze 8 & Under Championship meet was held at Husson College in Bangor, Feb. 25-27. The championship meet was for swimmers eight years old and younger. Swimmers older than eight can only compete in events in which they have not yet qualified for the state meet.
There were three swimmers that broke several of their own team records. Nicole Jewett (11) broke her records in the 11-12-year-old 50 freestyle in 31.56 seconds, the 11-12 200 free in 2:49.54, and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:25.53.
Noah Jordan (11) broke his record in the 11-12 100 breaststroke in 1:22.70 and Samantha Ober (10) broke her record in the 9-10 100 breaststroke in 1:34.09. Ben Milliken (11) broke two 11-12 records. He broke the 200-yd. breast record held by Nick McLeod in 3:03.02 and the 100 backstroke held by Tim George in 1:10.91.
John McLeod (18) also broke a record held by Tim George in the 15 & Over 200 IM in 2:11.43. Olivia Pennington (15) took a record held by Nori McLeod in the 15+ 500-yd. freestyle with a time of 6:22.66.
The 8 & Under team did a great job at their championship meet. In the overall individual high point scores for the girls, Elizabeth Ober placed 5th, Vanessa Albert placed 6th, and Nelly Stafford took 14th. In the overall individual high point scores for the boys Henry Currier placed 6th, Benji Pugh placed 7th, and Braxton Farrin took 8th. In the team results the girls took second place and the boys took third place putting the Wiscasset Unsinkables combined team in second place.
The Unsinkables had many athletes that qualified to swim at the winter state championship meet held at Bowdoin College March 10-13 Many team records were broken at the meet. John McLeod (18) broke three of his own records in the following events: 100 breaststroke in 1:06.27, 100 butterfly in 56.74, and 200 butterfly in 2:09.73. Samantha Ober (10) broke her records in the 9-10 50 breaststroke with a time of 42.75 and the 9-10 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:30.84.
Ben Milliken broke his own record in the 11-12 50 backstroke with a time of 31.81; broke Tim George’s 200 back record in 2:31.35; and broke Sylas Hatch’s record in the 200 IM in 56.74. Noah Jordan took three breaststroke records for 11-12-year-olds; the 50 breast in 35.89, the 100 breast in 1:19.54, and the 200 breast in 2:57.14. Ross Hanley took the 200 Individual Medley record from John McLeod with a time of 2:09.95. Olivia Pennington broke Maeve Tischbein’s record in the 1650 freestyle in 21:45.22.
Several individual swimmers placed in the top 10 in their age group events. Noah Jordan (11) placed 3rd in the 50 breast and 100 breast, 7th in the 200 breast and 9th in the 50 fly. John McLeod (18) placed 9th in the 50 freestyle and 200 fly.
Ben Milliken placed 4th in the 50 backstroke, 5th in the 50 free, 6th in the 100 back and 100 free, 7th in the 200 back, and 10th in the 500 free. Samantha Ober (10) took 1st place in the 100 breaststroke and 3rd in the 50 breaststroke. Jake Stafford (10) took 3rd in the 50 breast, 4th in the 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley, 5th in the 50 fly and 100 breast, and 7th in the 100 free. In individual high point scores Jake Stafford took 6th place in the 9-10-year-old boys’ division.
Overall in team scores with 21 teams represented the Unsinkables boys took ninth place and the girls took 17th place. Overall the Wiscasset Unsinkables placed tenth.
