South Bristol School defeated neighboring Bristol 2-1 on Sat., Oct. 18 to win the 2008 Busline League Co-ed soccer championship. The championship game was played in Rockland in cool temperatures, on a field much larger than either team was accustomed to playing on.
Tom Masters gave Bristol a 1-0 lead at the half on a shot from the side that sailed into the far upper hand corner. South Bristol scored second half goals late in the game to pull out the victory. South Bristol tied the game on a penalty kick by Casey Poland with 15 minutes to play.
The PK was called after Keegan Daly O’Donnell was tripped up in the penalty box. Mariner Sean Genthner dribbled the ball down the right sideline and dribbled on net, squeezing a shot inside the near post to score the game winner with five minutes remaining.
“The final five minutes were played at a feverish pitch,” coach Jason Bigonia said, commenting as the Mariners held on for their “first sports championship in many years.”

Bristol 9 – Appleton 3
Bristol defeated Appleton 9-3 in the Busline League semi-finals in Bristol on Oct. 16. Appelton’s Elliott Grindle scored the opening goal less than a minute into the contest. Bristol rattled off seven goals by halftime. Greg Anderson tied the score.
Tom Masters connected on a PK to give Bristol the lead for good. Michelle Cummings scored off the cross bar from 25 yards out; Kara Mullin headed in a goal off a mad scramble; Matt Bolster fired in a shot after collecting a failed defensive clear; Austin Dodge scored off a Mitchell Cummings cross, and Annabelle Terry scored at the left post.
Grindle added two second-half goals. Tom Masters, in net for an injured Loring Shible stopped a PK from Grindle. Cummings and Anderson added second-half goals for the Blue Devils. Picking up assists in the game for Bristol were Cummings and Bolster with two each, and Seward Matel and Tyler Cheney one each.
