Coastal Christian School, Waldoboro, won the Maine Christian School Sports League championship at Memorial Stadium in Portland, Oct. 27. The Rams have earned a spot in the championship game for the past three seasons, but this is the first time they have come home with the championship trophy. CCS formed a team in 2009 and joined the MCSSL that fall.
The game featured two undefeated teams, CCS with a record of 10-0-2, and Vineyard of Lewiston with an 11-0-1 record. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in 1st half action.
After 70 scoreless minutes, Harry Stred scored the winning goal. Seventh grader Maty Moore set up the goal with a pass to Josh Tracey. Tracey pushed the ball forward to Stred, who dribbled in and put a shot past Vineyard keeper Sam Hobson.
The goal stood up over the final 10 minutes, earning CCS a 1-0 championship win.
Coastal had 28 shots on goal. Matt Brown, in net for the Rams, made nine saves.
CCS saw strong offensive performances from seniors Jonah Cronkhite and Tony Lombardo, junior Harry Stred and sophomore Josh Tracey; strong midfield play from Lydia Brown and Maty Moore; and strong defensive from Logan Robitaille, Cody Weaver, Dillon Theriault and Vinny Lombardo.
