Waldoboro 9&10-year-old Little League softball all-stars rallied from behind to beat Knox Suburban 17-10. The game ended in controversy and the outcome was not decided until Sunday. A Waldoboro player did not get her turn at bat, a violation of Little League rules.
Coach Audra Carlson, new to coaching Little League, said, “I did not put her in soon enough. She was the on deck batter, when Knox Suburban got the third out.”
Players and families left the field, with rumors they had to forfeit the game, but the score stood, and coach Carlson was suspended for two games. With the win, Waldoboro advances to the District 2 championship game, to be played Fri., July 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Waldoboro.
If Waldoboro wins they are the D2 champions, if they lose, they will play a second game for the title and right to play in the State tournament on July 10.
Lydia Simmons struck out nine in the win (6B, 15H). Hitting for Waldoboro were Gabby DePatsy with a double and 4 singles, Lydia Simmons with a triple and 2 singles, Addie Jameson 3 singles, Josie Jameson a double and single, Cassidy Benner 2 singles, and Cassie Smeltzer, Maddy White and Juju Blackler a single each.
