Waldoboro 9 & 10-year-old Little League softball all-stars won the District 2 championship on their home field with a 14-7 win over Knox Suburban July 8. They now advance to the Maine Little League tournament in Glenburn.
Waldoboro competes in pool play July 16 at 1:30 p.m.; July 17 at 12:30 p.m.; July 18 at 3 p.m.; July 19 at 5:30 p.m.; and July 20 at 3 p.m. The top four teams in pool play will advance to the semi-finals.
Lydia Simmons got off to a slow start on Waldoboro’s mound, walking the first five batters, then settled down and walked only nine batters over the next five innings. Simmons struck out 11 and gave up just two hits. Abby Veilleux took the loss (12B, 8K, 2H, 10R), and Payton Wiley (1I, 4B, 0K, 2R) and Kristina Fergusson (2K, 3B, 1HP, 2R) pitched in relief.
Waldoboro took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Cassi Smeltzer walked and scored on a passed ball, and Gabby DePatsy walked and scored on a throwing error. Knox tied the game in the home half of the inning on five walks, with Wiley and Veilleux picking up RBIs.
Knox scored one in the 2nd to take the lead when Kristina Fergusson reached on an error and scored on a bases loaded walk to Veilleux.
Waldoboro recaptured the lead with three runs in the top of the 3rd. Jose Jameson walked and scored on a throwing error, and Lydia Simmons and Maddie White walked and scored on passed balls.
Knox added two runs in the 3rd to tie the game. Aubrey Schaffer and Hattie Watmough walked and scored on a Fergusson single.
Waldoboro retook the lead in the 4th with one run. Addie Jameson walked and scored on a Gabby DePatsy single.
Waldoboro broke the game open when they batted around and scored six runs in the 5th inning. White and Cassidy Benner walked. Alyssa Blackler hit an infield pop-fly that dropped between the pitcher and the first baseman for a single. Blackler rounded first and headed to second, forcing Benner to third and White to take off for home and score. JuJu Blackler was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for an RBI walk to Smeltzer, RBI sacrifice to Addie Jameson, and two run error to Gabby DePatsy. Lydia Simmons and White walked to load up the bases for an RBI walk to Benner.
Waldoboro added two runs in the 6th. J. Blackler was hit by a pitch, and Smeltzer, DePatsy and Simmons (RBI) walked.
Knox scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th, but fell short, when Simmons picked up the final three outs by strikeout. Gilliam LaFleche and Wiley walked and scored on a Veilleux single.
Hitting for Waldoboro were DePatsy and A. Blackler with a single each. Hitting for Knox were Fergusson and Veilleux with a single each.
