Wiscasset High School’s baseball team has just five returning starters from last year’s squad that went 8-5-1 and were seeded sixth in West Class C. “We have six seniors, but we are still young,” returning coach Todd Souza said.
The baseball program had 26 athletes come out for the team. “There are 11 sophomores in the program right now. They are a good group of athletes. They are going to be a fun group to watch,” Souza added.
Souza is keeping 10 athletes on the varsity roster and will be swinging two to three players up from the JV program. Wiscasset will be competing in the newly formed Southern Division of the Mt.Valley Conference and will play every team twice.
“It is the tougher bracket. Every one of these teams has an ace. Everyone in the division could go .500. Everybody could split,” Souza said of the equality in the division. Wiscasset also picked up two games, against two top Northern Division teams Livermore Falls and Dirigo.
Team members include seniors Chris Brawn (pitching, catching, third base), Cody Verrill (pitching, outfield), Jay Lamoureux (pitching, third base), Justin Caron (second base), Zach Pickering (outfield), and Mike Chapman (outfield); juniors Mason Brewer (pitching and catching), Aston Benn (shortstop, pitching), Ryan Segovia (first base), and Vincent Souza (outfield); and sophomores Devin Grover (outfield) and Jason Weatherbee (pitching).
Of Wiscasset’s fire power at the plate, Souza said “I think we will be pretty solid all the way through. We will have a tough middle line-up. The thing I like about this group is they are so versatile. Whether they lead off or hit ninth, they are going to be fine.”
“I don’t know that we will have a dominant pitcher, but on any given day any of our pitchers can be dominant,” Souza said. “I think defensively we will be better than we have been in a couple of years.”
Wiscasset opens their season on Fri. April 23 home against Livermore Falls. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
