Wiscasset boys’ soccer team defeated St. Dom’s 2-1 in double overtime Tuesday night to wrap up their Mt. Valley Conference undefeated, with a 13-0-1 record. Wiscasset (south division champs) travels to Mt.Valley High School in Rumford on Thurs., Oct. 21 to take on Dirigo (north division champs) for the MVC championship at 6 p.m.
Top seeded Wiscasset will play their first West C playoff game on Wed., Oct. 27 at home.
Wiscasset took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the contest on a goal set up by Ashton Benn. “Ashton put a nice move on a St. Dom’s defender and crossed the ball in front of the net,” coach Wayne Benn said. Ross Hanley buried the cross to give Wiscasset lead.
Wiscasset held the lead for over 65 minutes, before Alex Parker tied the score for St. Dom’s with 10:37 to play, and force overtime.
Brian Campbell scored the game winner with 2:06 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Redskins to their 13th win of the season. Campbell tore through the defense and went near post, bouncing the ball off a defender and in. “It was a nice shot, there wasn’t anything the defense could do about it,” coach Benn added.
Wiscasset held an 8-7 edge in shots, and both keepers made four saves each – Mason Brewer in net for Wiscasset and Cam Hainey in net for the Saints.
“All four of our defenders played great: Jason Weatherbee, Caleb Bryant, Devin Grover and Danny Murphy. The whole team played great,” Benn said.
The game was “pretty even. The first half we pretty much dominated. The second half it was them, and in the overtimes, it was us. It was a good game,” Benn said.
Wiscasset took advantage of two Monmouth handballs in the first 13 minutes of play. The first gave the Redskins a penalty kick 9:21 into the game. Ashton Benn beat Monmouth keeper Robbie Neal to the right to give Wiscasset a 1-0 lead. Benn struck again with 28:30 to go in the half on a direct kick just outside the box. Benn curled a shot around Monmouth’s defensive wall and into the lower right corner.
Wiscasset went up 3-0 with 14:52 to play when John McLeod collected a cross from Benn on the wing and banged it home.
Mason Brewer made three saves to earn the shutout for Wiscasset. Neal made 10 first-half saves and Devin West 11 second-half saves for Monmouth.
