Wiscasset boys’ basketball team picked up a pair of wins this week, beating Telstar 46-44 and St. Dom’s 49-48 in close match-ups. With the wins, Wiscasset improves to 11-6 with one regular season game left to play, home against Boothbay on Feb. 4.
The Saints led 12-9 at the quarter, Wiscasset 24-21 at the half, and the Saints 39-36 at the end of three in a “see-saw battle.” “We were down five with two minutes to go and down seven with a minute and half left,” coach Wayne Benjamin said. “Jones had a great floor game, Cody Griffin and Mason Brewer had good second halves, and Ashton Benn played a good all around game,” Benjamin added of the win.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Griffin 12, Benn 12, Jones 7, Devon Grover 7, Brewer 5 and Tyler Sonia 4. Scoring for St. Dom’s were Keaney 13, Poulin 11, Byron 9, Johnson 8, Day 4, and Novelle 3.
The Redskin led 13-8 at the quarter, before the Rebels knotted the score at 18-18 at the half. Wiscasset came out of the halftime gate flat and only posted eight points, while Telstar pumped in 16 to take 34-26 lead into the final period. Wiscasset collected two technical fouls, one from coach Wayne Benjamin and one from Jordan Jones, who entered the game with blood on his jersey.
The score bounced back and forth, before Wiscasset gained the upper hand at the foul line. “We made our foul shots when we needed to. Tyler Sonia made a key one. He and Jordan Jones made their free throws in the 4th quarter,” Benjamin said.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Sonia 14, Ashton Benn 14, Cody Griffin 6, Devon Grover 5, Jones 4 and Matt Brewer 2. Scoring for Telstar were O’Connor 15, Field 11, Whitney 8, Vaughn 6 and Howard 4.
