Winthrop led 7-3 at the quarter, before Wiscasset lit their home nets on fire in the second frame for 25 points to take the lead for good. Wiscasset netted five 3-pointers in the period, including three from Jordan Jones to take a 28-15 lead into the half. Wiscasset led 41-27 at the end of three.
Winthrop made a run at Wiscasset in the final quarter pulling within eight with 5:22 to go on a three point play at the line from Chase Hopkins. Wiscasset boosted the lead to 10, but the Ramblers cut it to eight twice more in the next minute of play. Wiscasset scored nine straight points, including making five of six free throws, led by Ashton Benn (4 of 4), to put the game out of reach of Winthrop.
Scoring for Wiscasset were Jones 18 (4R,2S6A), Mason Brewer 14 (12R), Benn 10 (5R,6A), Bryant 6, Dan Murphy 4, Tyler Sonia 3 (2R,2S,4A), and Devin Grover 3 (2R,2S). Scoring for Winthrop were Billy Gordon 17, Ryan Conant 8, Cheney Foster 7, Travis Luce 6, Chase Hopkins 3 and Ryan Castonguay 2.
“It was back and forth the whole game,” coach Wayne Benjamin said. “We played not to win. We had a chance to win it in regulation but Tyler (Sonia) missed the front half of a one-on-one. With 12 seconds left Ashton (Benn) missed the front end and made the second to put us in overtime.”
Wiscasset went up by three, but “made some bad decisions late in overtime. We had a chance to win it (in the second OT) but couldn’t finish,” Benjamin said of missing a jumpshot.
“Mason Brewer had an all around good game with 12 points, 11 rebounds, 7 steals and five blocks,” Benjamin said.
Also scoring for Wiscasset were Benn 13 (4A,3R), Murphy 10 (12R), Jones 7 (7A,3R), Grover 7, and Bryant 3 (3R). Scoring for Monmouth were Whitmore 30 (13 of 14 from foul line), Neal 9, Bachelder 8, Woodman 4 and Goff 2.
