Wiscasset High School boys’ soccer team graduated seven seniors from a team that were undefeated and won the Mt.Valley Conference championship last year.
This year, returning coach Wayne Benn expects his team “to be in the running. We’re not going to win in the same fashion we did last year. It’s going to be ugly. There will be a lot of one goal games.”
“We have a lot of speed on the field. We are working on our passing and making our runs,” Benn said. “I hope for good leadership from our seniors. I think we’ll have a successful season. That would be making the tournament.”
Wiscasset traveled to Lewiston on Saturday and played five round-robin games, winning one and losing four. The Wolverines lost to Erskine by one and Greely by two.
“There was very good competition. It was hotter than a pancake. I only had four subs, and they were subbing eight to 10 at a time. We played the teams tough. It was a great effort. We learned a lot and are working on our mistakes,” Benn said.
With only 19 players out for soccer this fall, Wiscasset will not field a JV boys’ team.
Wiscasset’s team is made up of eight seniors including Jason Weatherbee (goalkeeper), Devin Grover, Corey Hodgkins (center midfield), Caleb Bryant (front line), James Andretta (striker), Brandon Bailey (striker), Casey Dalton (midfield), and Jonathan West (defense); four juniors Eddie Stewart (wing), Ryan Hanley, Zach Ellis and Joe Chapman; sophomores Logan Grover (midfield), Austin Haskell (defense), and Dave Marcus; and freshmen Mason Whitaker, Camden Reiss, Dylan MacMahon and Andrew Carson.
Wiscasset opens their season on Tues., Sept. 6 home against Lisbon at 4 p.m.
