Sixth ranked Wiscasset High School boys’ soccer team were upset 2-0 by number 11 Waynflete in the West Class B preliminaries in Wiscasset on Saturday. Waynflete dominated the first half, out shooting Wiscasset 13-2.
Their 13th shot of the game was unlucky for Wiscasset as Omar Abdille put in a rebounded shot off defender Tyler Sonia.
Wiscasset got their game flowing in the second half, but were unable to punch a shot past Waynflete keeper Chris Gillespie. The Redskins missed high and wide on several shots. Gillespie stopped Danny Murphy on a hard collision with 24 minutes to play, then stopped Michael Andretta on a diving tip moments later.
Andretta, Cody Griffin and Ross Hanley missed wide, and Ashton Benn was stopped by Gillespie in Wiscasset’s desperate attempt to get on the boards. Waynflete’s Devin VanDyke sealed the win with 19:05 to go when he put in a rebounded shot of Wiscasset keeper Mason Brewer.
Waynflete held a 22-12 edge in shots. Brewer made nine saves for Wiscasset and Gillespie six saves for Wiscasset.
