After knocking on the door all season, Wiscasset girls’ soccer team collected their first win of the season 1-0 over Winthrop Sept. 16. The Lady Redskins pounded the Rambler net with 33 shots. “We were on their end most of the game,” coach Chris Hammond said.
Winthrop keeper Danielle Pease kept the Ramblers in the game with 20 saves. Maggie West netted the game winner for Wiscasset on a cross from Alli Johnson with 12:40 remaining in the contest.
Winthrop “had a breakaway with two minutes left. They had a wing that was very fast, thankfully she kicked it over the goal,” Hammond added.
Kasey Cromwell made three saves for Wiscasset to earn the shutout win.
“Becca Slack has been playing real well, as well as the defense of Bri Goud, Abby Foster, and Cassandra Tardif,” Hammond added.
Haley Grant scored on a corner kick that she started. Grant passed the ball to Goud, then worked a give and go with her, banging a back pass off a fullback’s head and into the net.
Arsenault scored the game winner with 12 minutes to play.
Monmouth held a 25-14 advantage in shots. Cromwell made 18 saves in net for Wiscasset and Kelsie Hilton eight stops for the Mustangs.
“It was an up and down game, not much finishing. It was a good, clean, hard fought game. Kasey (Cromwell) came up big in the end,” Hammond added.
Wiscasset’s record is 1-4-2.
