Wiscasset girls basketball team returns seven players from a team that went 4-14 a year ago.
“A major change for the team this year is our new JV coach Ben Clark,” returning coach Patrick Quinn said. “He is coming to us having played basketball on the 1998 Class A state champion Skowhegan team. He has brought his positivity, passion and defensive expertise to WHS. He moved to Wiscasset recently and has fit right in with the girls. I am expecting twins during the season and, depending on the timing, Ben will be running the show for a couple games,”
Playing hoops for the Lady Wolverines this season are seniors Brianna Goud, Kasey Cromwell, and Hannah Campbell; juniors Kayla Gordon, Miranda McIntire, Alecia Faulkingham, Hanna Foye, Tylan Onorato, Rachel Berry and Hannah Malloy; sophomores Colleen Hendricks and Ericka Auger, and freshmen Gabby Chapman, Hayhlee Craig, Kacie Luce, and Keara Hunter.
“I am enthusiastic about our team this year. We are returning seven players with varsity experience (Goud, Cromwell, Gordon, McIntire, Faulkingham, Onorato and Foye) who are entering their third season playing together,” Quinn said. “The chemistry is visible between them. Goud and Cromwell have grown tremendously as leaders and have shown a commitment to team success this season. Goud was last season’s leading scorer and rebounder and Cromwell led in steals and assists.
“Gordon has improved her footwork and mechanics in the post and has developed into a scoring threat. Faulkingham is an outside shooting threat who can also get to the rim. McIntire sets up teammates effectively while grabbing more than her share of rebounds. Onorato has become a fearsome defender on the perimeter. Foye is a versatile player who can guard post and wing players and has increased her shooting range.
“Hendricks, Chapman, Berry, Maloy and Campbell have been working hard in practice and will be ready when their number gets called. We will make a serious push to make it the tournament this February.
“I expect us to reduce turnovers, attack the rim, and apply more defensive pressure more than we have in recent seasons. We had a very successful summer program with competitive games against league opponents Hall-Dale, Monmouth, and Lisbon (all of whom we play twice this season).”
