Wiscasset Middle School boys’ soccer team capped a perfect season with a 4-3 come from behind victory over Medomak Middle School for the Busline League Southern Division championship.
The Riverhawks led three times in the game, and three times the Warriors knotted the score. JD Souza scored the game winner on a pass from Russell Marr.
Ollie Brown gave Medomak the lead 32 seconds into the contest on a breakaway. Souza tied the game from 20 yards out with 10:35 to go in the half. Medomak retook the lead with three minutes left in the half on a shot from Isaac Eustler, that saw Wiscasset keeper Conlin Ranta slip and fall in the mud.
Wiscasset knotted the score 2-2 a minute into the 2nd half when Max Sampson converted a cross from Souza. One minute and change later, Medomak went back up on top when Tucker Prescott stole the ball from a Warrior defender and crested the net.
Souza scored with 12:33 to go to once again tie the game at 3-3, before scoring the game winner with just under nine minutes to play.
Wiscasset’s Kevin Lynch came up with a big defensive play to stop a Riverhawk breakaway with seven minutes to play and preserve the win. Medomak missed wide late in the game.
Wiscasset held a 10-5 advantage in shots. Jackson Vail made four stops for Medomak and Nick Grover one. Conlin Ranta made one stop for Wiscasset and Nate Mills two.
Medomak wraps up the season with a 7-4 record.
Wiscasset wrapped up the Southern Division title with a perfect 12-0 record. The only games the Warriors have trailed in all season were their regular season 4-3 win over Medomak and their Southern Division championship 4-3 win over Medomak.
“They are tough. They are talented, and there are so many of them,” coach Todd Souza said.
The eighth graders on the team have a three-year record of 39-2. This is the third straight year Wiscasset has won the Southern Division title. Two years ago they were co-Busline champs with Camden, and in 2010 they were Busline League runner-ups to Thomaston.
“Every player on Wiscasset’s team scored a goal this year – all 15 of them. That was one of our goals,” coach Todd Souza said.
Wiscasset out scored their opponents 67-11 this season, and eight of those goals were to Medomak Middle School. The Warriors were led offensively this season by JD Souza, with 27 goals, 14 assists; Russell Marr with 12 goals and 8 assists; and Michael Stewart with 5 goals, 4 assists.
Nick Grover and Vail shared the shutout in net for Medomak. They were aided by strong defensive performances from Ben Turner, Patrick Madden, Patrick White and Cameron Robinson. Wiscasset 5 – Richmond 1
