Wiscasset Middle School clenched the 2011 Busline League baseball championship June 15 at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro. The title was the first for the Warriors in 18 years. Their last league title came in 1995.
Wiscasset, who finished the season at 10-2, knocked off number one seed Jefferson in the Southern Division finals to advance to the championships game against Thomaston (7-2-1). The Warriors defeated the Clippers 9-3 for the Busline League championship trophy.
Travis McMahon went the distance in the win, allowing just one hit (9K, 5B, 1HP). Caleb Jacob took the loss in four and a third innings (7R, 4B, 7H, 4K), and Sloane Smith closed out the game (3H, 5B, 3K, 2R).
Thomaston held a 1-0 lead for two innings, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st when Phillip Atwood walked and scored on a Walker Ranney single.
Wiscasset plated three runs in the top of the 3rd to take the lead. Travis Padilla drew a walk, moved over on a Tyler Bailey sacrifice bunt and scored on a McMahon single. Darin Wood singled and both he and McMahon scored when Mike Stewart reached on an error.
Thomaston tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd with two runs. Jacob reached on an error and scored when Walker Ranney reached on an error. Ranney scored on a wild pitch.
McMahon and his Warrior defense shut Thomaston down over the next four innings. Wiscasset took the lead for good with two runs in the 4th. Ben Chadwick hit a lead off single, Padilla doubled and both scored on a Bailey single.
They added two runs in the 5th. Matt Craig reached on an error Chadwick singled and Andy Hutchins walked to load up the bases. Craig came home on a baulk, and Chadwick on an RBI single from Padilla.
Wiscasset added a run in the 6th when Stewart walked and scored on a bases-loaded infield fly hit by Chadwick, that saw the fly ball dropped. The Warriors scored the final run in the 7th when Bailey walked, moved over on a McMahon single and scored on a Wood single.
Hitting for Wiscasset were McMahon with a double and 2 singles, Padilla a double and single, Wood and Chadwick 2 singles each, and Bailey a single. Walker Ranney collected the only hit for Thomaston.
