Izzy Zaidi, of Newcastle, graduated from Colby College in Waterville on Sunday, May 21 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was the commencement speaker at the graduation ceremony.
Exhibit Highlights Seafaring Traditions of Early Tattoo Art
A special summer exhibit, “Dungeons and Dragons: Seafarers and Tattoos,” opens on Saturday, June 10 at the Lincoln County Historical Association’s Old Jail Museum on Federal Street in Wiscasset. The setting is very appropriate for this exhibit, since the seafarers adorned with tattoos were often “guests” of the jail.

New Camp for Girls Emphasizes Power of Nature
Registration is now open for Hearty Roots, a new summer camp program for girls ages 9-15. Founded by Haley Bezon, a school counselor at Edgecomb Eddy School, the camp will provide girls with a “growth-producing” summer camp experience utilizing the restorative powers of nature.

Damariscotta bone artist is UK-bound: Up-and-coming local sculptor Keith Plummer, who appeared in this column back on April 11, announced on May 18 that he was accepted as one of 25 finalists for the Visual Art Open contest, an annual international art competition based in Chester, England whose primary goal is “to reveal and promote unknown artists who are yet to establish their profile in the contemporary art world,” as the contest’s website, visualartopen.com, puts it.
Free Ice Cream for Vets on Memorial Day Weekend
To show its appreciation for the sacrifice of U.S. veterans, Total Victory Ice Cream in Waldoboro will be dispensing free ice cream to all military personnel and veterans on Memorial Day weekend, Friday-Monday, May 26-29. The venue will be open from 3-7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday to start the season, with expanded hours coming later as demand increases.

An 82-year-old man with Alzheimer’s disease who went missing in the area of Upper Round Pond Road in Bristol on Tuesday, May 23 was found “upright and talking but cold and wet” by the Maine Warden Service early Wednesday.

LA to Dedicate John Bowers Baseball Field on May 26
On Friday, May 26 at 4 p.m., Lincoln Academy in Newcastle will dedicate its new John Bowers Baseball Field. John Bowers was a Lincoln Academy graduate in the Class of 1975 who was an avid baseball player. He served on the Lincoln Academy Board of Trustees for many years before passing away in 2011.
