Dodge Point Dock Rebuilt and Ready for Boating Season

Just in time for boating season, the dock at Dodge Point has been installed for the summer. The dock is open for public use and is a popular spot for picnics or to reach the hiking trails by boat.

Congratulations to Owen Williamson who has been selected for the 2019 Willow Grange scholarship. He will be studying diesel hydraulic mechanics at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle and is a recent Lincoln Academy graduate. He will receive his $500 check after successfully completing his first semester. 

Honey Bee Swarm Collection Service in Knox, Lincoln Counties

As part of their natural reproductive cycle, honeybees will swarm. A swarm is when a queen and a good portion of the worker population of bees leave the hive to find a new home. While a honeybee swarm is relatively harmless, it can be a frightening sight to people. Swarms should not be sprayed with water or disturbed in any other way. It is best to clear the area until a beekeeper arrives to make the removal.

Local Man Visits All 50 States

Mark Lazzari, of Damariscotta, recently visited Alaska, his 50th state in the United States to have visited. His daughter, Emma, accompanied him, making Alaska her 36th state to visit.

Climate Driving New Right Whale Movement

New research connects recent changes in the movement of North Atlantic right whales to decreased food availability and rising temperatures in the Gulf of Maine’s deep waters. Right whales have been showing up in unexpected places in recent years, putting the endangered species at increased risk. The study, which was published in Oceanography, and conducted by scientists from more than 10 institutions, provides insights to this key issue complicating conservation efforts.

Anglers who fish in Maine now have a new tool that makes it quick and easy to find out the fishing regulations on any of Maine’s inland waters.

This weekend is Maine’s free fishing weekend and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife is encouraging everyone to get outside and enjoy a day fishing with family or friends on one of Maine’s many waters.

New Report Outlines Future of Maine Land Conservation

All Mainers should be interested in a report recently issued by the Maine Land Conservation Task Force titled “Shaping the Next Generation of Land Conservation in Maine.” The task force comprised a diverse range of interests and perspectives, including state legislators, town managers, sporting groups, ecologists, Indian nations, land trusts, and tourism experts.
