Free Giant Pumpkin Plants on Seedling Sunday
On Sunday, May 20, Seedling Sunday will officially kick off as part of the the 2018 Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta. On Seedling Sunday, volunteer-growers can adopt the 600 10-day-old Atlantic Giant pumpkin seedlings and grow pumpkins that will become the granddaddies of the pumpkin patch.
Lighthouse Tower Opening Soon for Season, Volunteers Sought
Every year since 2003, the volunteer docents and Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse open Pemaquid Point Lighthouse tower to the public. One can climb the 30 steps of the spiral staircase and continue up the ladder to enter the lamp room for expansive views of Monhegan Island and the rocky coast. One can enjoy this opportunity to learn about the lighthouse’s rich history and if one is over 4 feet tall, one can climb to the lamp room at the top. The tower is open seven days a week from Mother’s Day through mid-October, weather permitting.
Westport Island Cleanup Day a Success
A very enthusiastic group of approximately 20 Westport Island residents used near perfect weather to make the island’s April 28 cleanup day a great success.

Windjammer Days Fest to Live-Stream Gathering of the Fleet
The 56th edition of the Windjammer Days festival in Boothbay Harbor, which will run from Sunday, June 24 to Saturday, June 30, will feature a new look at what previously was called the Parade of Sail. This year, on Wednesday, June 27 from 1-3 p.m., drones will stream live video to a jumbo LED screen in Whale Park, as an announcer narrates the Gathering of the Fleet event. For those who will want to see the gathering from the water, there will be plenty of boat tours available.
Governor Directs Flags to Half Staff in Memory Of Deputy Sheriff Cole
As a sign of respect for the service and sacrifice of Somerset County Deputy Sheriff Cpl. Eugene Cole, who was killed in the line of duty Wednesday, April 25, Gov. Paul R. LePage has directed that all United States flags and State of Maine flags shall be flown at half staff immediately for at least three days, as well as on the day of Cole’s interment.

The 11th annual Attic, Basement, Closet rummage sale, sponsored by the Round Pond Schoolhouse Association, is seeking donations. This year’s sale will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27 at the historic Washington Schoolhouse in the heart of Round Pond village.
