Shawna L. Gatto’s ex-husband, son, and others testified in her defense Monday, April 8, the final day of her trial in connection with the death of 4-year-old Kendall Chick. The judge is expected to deliver a verdict April 30.
The Maine Department of Health and Human Services checked on Kendall Chick just once in about three years between her placement with her grandfather and his fiancee and the girl’s death in December 2017.

Stephen Hood, of Wiscasset, the grandfather of 4-year-old homicide victim Kendall Chick, testified about the toddler’s injuries and their possible causes on the third day of his fiancee’s trial, Wednesday, April 3.
While two medical experts disagree on the timing of a fatal abdominal injury to a 4-year-old Wiscasset girl, they agree she was a victim of child abuse.
During the first day of the trial of Shawna Lyn Gatto, charged with depraved indifference murder in connection with the death of 4-year-old Kendall Chick, prosecutors presented photos of the girl’s numerous injuries. Gatto, in a recording of an interview with police, blamed the injuries on the girl’s clumsiness.
The bench trial of Shawna L. Gatto, the Wiscasset woman charged with depraved indifference murder in connection with the December 2017 death of 4-year-old Kendall Chick, is underway at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.
