Waldoboro firefighters were understandably grumpy early this week when news broke that a man had been arrested for threatening another man with a knife while waiting for the Waldoboro Fire Department’s 175th anniversary parade to come through on Saturday.
Where Did The Name ‘Taniscot’ Come From?
I was interested in reading the Letter to the Editor from Otis Page of California on the names of Damariscove Island and the Damariscotta River. (“How did these names come to be?” LCN, 8/8/13, Page 4) I remember Otis. We called him Poppy at Lincoln Academy. I was in the class of 1947 and he was in the class of 1949.
I Have Been Blessed
As I get ready to begin my retirement from education, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the wonderful people of MSAD/RSU 40.
Dedicated To Doing Customers Right
About four weeks ago I prepaid $60 for gas at Newcastle Maritime Farms. I pumped $51 worth of gas before my tank filled. I then got in my car and drove away without collecting the $9 of change.
This Is The Way Democracy Works
I feel compelled to respond to the Aug. 22 Letter to the Editor in the LCN, “Waldoboro Budget Cuts”, written by Bob Butler. First, I would like to say I am disappointed in the finger pointing at three select board members by Mr. Butler.
The Community School
Often our local K-8 school is referred to as “Great Salt Bay” or “GSB”. The official name is Great Salt Bay Community School. Shortening the name, as we all do, omits the word “community.”
FIRST FIRSTS
Schools open this week. In short order, we will all be back in our familiar fall routines. Some of us focus on getting the kids out the door in the morning, and others are mainly concerned about avoiding school buses during the morning commute.
How Unfortunate This Act Is
I have recently been informed that Jefferson has fired two art teachers. If this is correct I would like to point out how unfortunate this act is.
GETTING ON THAT TIME
We hate to admit it but we can see Labor Day from here.
Hogwash
We have been told by Maine Department of Transportation spokesperson Steve Bodge, that the widening, straightening and curbing of two miles of Route 129 is for reasons of “safety” and “drainage.” This is hogwash. Anyone who lives down here knows that there have been no accidents along this stretch due to road conditions (zero) and that the minor drainage problems can be accomplished in any number of smaller ways.
Their Own Personal Agenda
I would like to start out by saying that I normally support the Select Board of the town of Waldoboro, but in this case I feel that they only have their own personal agenda, which is to punish the police department.
DECISION TIME
Next Tuesday, July 23, in Jefferson a small number of residents are going to commit the town to a course of action.
Overdue, But Sincere
I am writing to praise one (actually two) of our local merchants. My letter is long overdue, but that does not make it any less sincere.
Vote ‘Yes ‘For Lower Taxes
If you are a resident of Jefferson who is alarmed at the recent increase in your property taxes, vote “yes” on the Jefferson School Committee budget in the Jefferson special election next Tuesday, July 23.
