In the last seven days, the RSU 12 board revisited and reinstated, albeit temporarily, the Wiscasset High School mascot; there was a major structure fire in the Damariscotta Mills; and, a simmering dispute between the town of Newcastle and the Newcastle Fire Company boiled over in the public eye, again.
This Place We Call Home
Diana and I had no idea just how lucky we were when 30 plus years ago we moved into this wonderful community. The longer we live here, the more we realize just how fortunate we are to be in this most special place. While it was the Damariscotta estuary of lake, river and ocean that brought us here from other Maine parts, it is certainly the people and community that have made it such an incredible place to live our lives and raise our family.
Learn To Help Care For The Place We Love
I would like to urge people to learn about how to care for the Maine we all love. Take part in the Midcoast Steward Program.
Be Aware Of Scams
I am writing this letter to raise awareness of the scams that are being presented to the public, especially the elderly.
Saving $26,000 At The Expense Of Losing Our Rights
I recently received an “opinion post card,” (really a vote-card) from the Alna/Westport Citizens for Choice on Choice committee. After reading the information letter provided, I am confused with, and disappointed in my fellow Alna residents.
THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD
The images from Japan this week are almost as horrifying as those from 9-11 and every bit as searing as the scenes that followed Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in 2005.
Never Been Sorry For Trusting Our Neighbors
I am disturbed by the email from the office to town email list. First of all I have been involved in this town since 1988 when I came in to see about working off my past taxes. In turn I was asked to be the town clerk when Lisa Bailey gave it up. I had been her deputy over a year. I had to give up my job in 2000 when I broke my shoulder. I was hired as the deputy in August of 2008, when I came to work off taxes I couldn’t pay.
A Thankless Job
I was amazed by your story on the Bremen Budget Committee meeting. (“Bremen Budget Committee calls for stricter rules on selectmen,” LCN, Page 10, 1/27/11)
Does Food Pantry Trump Health Care?
Mr. Schaaf wrote a confusing letter to the editor.
The Fault Lays A Lot Nearer Home
Craig Eliot does a great job exposing the loss of local control in his letter.
Join Me In My Outrage
I commend Susan Connery and Jane Ross for submitting letters to the LCN that appeared in the Jan. 27 edition expressing their disappointment with Governor LePage’s recent “Kiss my butt” response to a reporter’s question.
STILL PROUD
We love Nancy Wilson.
Nancy, our long time Bremen correspondent and resident general-purpose curmudgeon at large, is as proud and independent as they come. We were alarmed by news of her first car accident Jan. 28 and even more concerned when we learned she had been in a second crash in Thomaston Feb. 5.
Listen To All Constituents
Under our representative democracy, it has been my understanding that people are generally encouraged to contact their elected representatives with concerns about legislative issues. After recently corresponding with (District 51 Rep.) Jonathan McKane, R-Newcastle, to express my opinion of proposed changes to the Maine Public Employees’ Retirement System, I was shocked at his terse and rude response.
I Do Not Support Taking Tips From Hardworking People
Early in the legislative session I co-sponsored a bill that I thought, and was told by the sponsor, Sen. Brian Langley, would have made minor changes to laws necessary to conform with federal law related to regulating restaurants.
