Imagine the delight of this 80-year-old lady (with a bad shoulder) this past weekend as I experienced the prodigious and enthusiastic efforts of several Lincoln County (and some Sagadahoc) kids, with their adult overseers, as they swooped in to rake my yard.
REHABILITATION VS. PUNISHMENT
The sentence of a Boothbay man for attempting to murder a man in Edgecomb two years ago will test our new district attorney’s rehabilitation-first approach to criminal justice.
Whitefield Library News
Welcome to the Whitefield Library News! I’m pretty confident some of you have already heard about us and have even been to our library over the past two summers it has been open. But I’m here to tell you that things are moving forward, and we’re all very excited!
Waste Watch
Looks like we’re finally going to have a week with more sun than clouds. I hope you have your bug spray ready, because the black flies are here.
From the Legislature: Unnecessary Tax Increases Could Harm Economy
Now that the snow has melted and spring has finally arrived, we are beginning to enter the final stretch of work here in Augusta. Legislative committees are hard at work sifting through more than 2,000 bills with a deadline of May 10 to vote on all bills. To accommodate this deadline, the presiding officers have waived the two-week public advertising requirement, which allows committees to hold public hearings on any bills in their possession at any time.

Mother’s Day music: When I reached British singer-songwriter Callaghan by phone on Friday, May 3, she was on the road, fresh off of a gig the previous night at the Museum of Commerce in Pensacola, Fla. and soon to be performing at the Standard Deluxe in Waverly, Ala., on May 5.
HONOR YOUR MOTHER
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12.

Fun, intimate community theater: I love going to River Company plays in Skidompha Library’s Porter Meeting Hall. I like to sit in the front row of the cozy, intimate space, basking in the feeling of being immersed in the story being played out mere feet away from me.
REVOLTING AND BRUTAL
The guilty verdict for the murderer of an innocent child in Wiscasset brings a measure of closure to this tragedy, but much work remains to deliver real justice.
Three’s a Blessing
Three people living on a back road in South Bristol died within two months between Dec. 11 and Feb. 3. Their average age was 90 and the average duration of each person’s only marriage was over 60 years. They lived within shouting distance of each other and set the gold standard for the way they loved their families and a plot of land they had called home for most of their adult lives. Their heartfelt obituaries could not cover all of nine decades and a missing message was how special these three were as neighbors.
From the Legislature: Getting a Bill to the Finish Line
You may have heard that there are over 2,000 bills being considered in the Legislature. This is the product of several things happening at various stages of the session, which goes from January into June this year and January into April the second year.

Art in the country: There’s an art show on the walls of the community room at Sheepscot General – that oasis of goodness smack-dab in the middle of the beautiful rolling farmland of Whitefield – that is really worth spending some time checking out. It’s an exhibit of work – lots of it – by the employees at the rural cafe, store, and farm, and it gives one insight into what makes those nice folks tick.
THE DIRTY SECRET OF PUBLIC SERVICE
We were struck this week by a quote from Academy Hill native and Portland mayoral candidate Belinda Ray in Maia Zewert’s front-page article.
