The Jefferson Historical Society will have its annual Open House and Exhibit Day with exhibits of photos, documents and items gleaned from Jefferson’s past. A feature will be Jefferson schools and its students. A second feature will be vintage photos showing the many buildings on what is Routes 126 and 206 which go through the Village area. Many other items of interest will be on display and visitors will be able to tour the three floors of the 1869-built building recently restored by the Society. Weather permitting Ralph Bond’s grandfather’s 1800’s horse-drawn hearse will be exhibited and lunches available from Sully’s Hotdog and Brot Cart. There may even be some animals in the Old Jefferson Cattlepound nearby. FMI: 549-5258 or 549-5592

Have you visited the Frances Perkins Homestead yet? This summer, there are three opportunities to enjoy guided tours of this National Historic Landmark, home to Frances Perkins, FDR’s Secretary of Labor and the first woman to serve as a cabinet secretary. See her family’s 1837 Brick House with its 57 acres of fields, gardens, and trails to the Damariscotta River and learn about how this place shaped her New Deal legacy; Saturday July 21, Saturday August 4 & Saturday September 8, 2018. Two tour times are available each day. The 9:00 AM tour is 3 hours and includes the Homestead and a walk to the Damariscotta River. The 1:30 PM tour is 2 hours and includes only the Homestead. Tours will be led by Frances Perkins Center Board members, an archeologist who has conducted surveys of the site, and Perkins’ grandson, Tomlin Perkins Coggeshall.

“Egghead Evenings” are open discussion groups focusing on
policy-related or historical topics featuring experts who live in or
frequent Midcoast Maine.
Heather Cox Richardson, Professor of History at Boston College, will lead a discussion about the two major political parties and how they got where they are today. She is the author of “To Make Men Free: The History of the Republican Party” (Basic Books, 2014) which examines the GOP’s 160 years of twists and turns in accessible prose sharing comprehensive research.
Professor Richardson teaches the history of the American West in addition to courses on U.S. politics and economics, specifically during the Nineteenth century. According to her bio on the BC website, “She is currently working on an intellectual history of American politics and a graphic treatment of the Reconstruction Era.” Richardson grew up in Maine and is a part-time resident of Round Pond.
The Lincoln County Democratic Committee’s Victory 2018 Campaign Office is located in the second floor of the Overlook Building at 521 Main St. in Damariscotta. There is plenty of parking and easy access from the rear of the building located across from Round Top Ice Cream.
