07/06/2020 | 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
A new way to support local farmers, producers and fisherman in Waldoboro on Mondays from 3:00 – 6:00 pm from July 6 to October 12 at the Long Cove Farmer’s Market. A short 5 mile drive on south 220 from Route 1 takes you to East Forty Farm, a small family farm on the Medomak River where they raise whey fed pork and make Lakin’s Gorges Cheese.
Recognizing that businesses are still struggling and the town of Waldoboro was not running their farmer’s market this year, Allison and Neal Foley requested permission from the town to host a market at the farm. It will be held in the roadside fields with parking on the grass and along the driveway.
We will have a wonderfully diverse assortment of products at the market. Lakin’s Gorges original recipe, cow’s milk cheese and East Forty Farm pork, handmade pasta and cannoli filled with handmade ricotta. Switchback Farms will offer honey, jams and jellies, mangalista pork and seasonal vegetables. Almost Edible Soap makes wonderful goat soaps and scrubs. Oyster Creek Mushroom Company sells
fresh and dried mushrooms. Spartan Sea Farms harvests oysters and kelp. Fiore Olive Oils sells olive oils and vinegars to help you create a perfect meal from all your farmer’s market purchases. The Waldoboro Public Library’s village Bookshop will have $1 books for sale, too.
We will be following the CDC safety guidelines, so please wear a mask and stay one cow length apart when shopping.
For more information, please call Allison at 207-230-4318. Updated information will be on https://eastfortyfarm.com/events/

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) fishery is not only Maine’s most valuable marine resource, it is also the most valuable species harvested in the United States. Maine’s lobster is perhaps the only species in the world to have been heavily fished for well over a century but is doing better in recent years than ever before with record landings in 2016. One might think this is a fishery with few worries now or in the future. However, challenges for this fishery have never been greater. Today, the economic impact of COVID-19, international trade problems, concerns about the northern right whale and bait shortages all weigh heavily on everyone who fishes for lobsters on the Maine coast. While many of those concerns will hopefully be resolved in the next several years, a less conspicuous but a longer-term concern relates to climate change. The warming Gulf of Maine has generally improved conditions for baby lobster abundance but big changes may be occurring to where lobsters live.
