First Face of America NOVA Documentary: 2018, 60 minutes. Admission is FREE.
Thirteen thousand years ago a young teenager fell to her death in a 100 foot deep pit in a cave in Mexico’s Yucatan. Her skeletal remains were hidden by waters that had flooded the cave thousands of years earlier.
Recently, a team of cave divers discovered her complete skeleton along with the fossilized remains of extinct Ice Age animals. NOVA takes you on an exciting but dangerous underwater journey to recover the girl’s remains and better understand the origins of the First Americans. The film explores why she traveled nearly a mile underground in the dark recesses of this massive cave with nothing more than a torch. The team of archaeologists and scientists seek answers to the teenager’s family origins and why her appearance is
so much different from today’s Native Americans.
A 15-20 minute discussion will follow the movie.

In the instrumental food chain, the five-string banjo is one of the more dominant beasts: loud, brash and very hard to tame. In 1945, Earl Scruggs made the biggest leap in harnessing its raw power, bringing a
revolutionary precision of touch and depth of tone. Thousands of three-finger style banjo players have since made their marks, but none has cut such a path or moved so far along it as has Alison Brown.
She’s acclaimed as one of today’s finest progressive banjo players, but you rarely find her in a conventional bluegrass setting.
Instead, she’s known for leading an ensemble that successfully marries a broad array of roots-influenced music: folk, jazz, Celtic and Latin. Whether or not you like the sound of the banjo, take a chance and come tonight. It will change the way you think about the instrument.
