Each year (with a few years off due to the pandemic), local musician Gary Blackman rounds up a corral full of musical talent for this evening showcasing Maine musicians. The night is a fundraiser for the Opera House, with all performers donating their time and talents!

Please come out and cheer on your neighbors, and give a big Yahoo! for Gary who has raised over $25,000 for the Opera House over the years.

Jefferson had the rare good fortune of processing the extensive archival papers of Elizabeth Coatsworth, one of the most accomplished children’s book authors and poets of the mid 20th century, as well as the papers of her daughter, Kate Barnes, Maine’s first Poet Laureate. Together, their papers present an intimate glimpse into the makings of a matriarchal line of Maine writers. Jefferson will speak about his experience processing these collections, as well as present illustrative work from each writer, and provide historical and biographical context.

First Annual Pemaquid Fall Festival, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Byre Farm, 25 Rock School House Road, Bristol. Admission is free. The festival features a beekeeping demonstration by Switchback Farm, antique farm equipment by The Byre Farm, wool spinning by Hatchtown Farm, and weaving by the Village Weaver. Tickets for the Mangalitsa, a pasture raised heritage breed, local pork lunch are $20 per person. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, homemade baked beans from local beans and dessert. The meal will be available from 11 a.m. until the food sells out.

Upcoming Turkey Shoot Competitions at the SFGC Rifle Range

The Samoset Fish and Game Club is announcing their upcoming Turkey Shoot competition events at their rifle range in Bristol. The events are open to the public and all are welcome to attend a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. Competitors will have one shot per round for all events. Competitors are vying for a “Top Shot” title and a turkey. The person who shoots closest to the center of the target earns the title and prize.

SFGC members will be in attendance to answer questions, oversee and participate in the events. Youth competitors must be accompanied by an adult. Members and non-members, males and females, adults and youth are encouraged to attend.

The shotgun competition will be held on Sunday, October 23 at 10:00 AM. Each round of competition will be $3.00. SFGC provides the ammunition for the shotgun shoot. Competitors shoot at 25 yard targets for a chance to earn a “Top Shot” title and a turkey.

The rifle range is located on the Transfer Station Road in Bristol.

Kay Hardy Campbell, author of A Caravan of Brides and Sons of Fez; Kay Tobler Liss, author of The Last Resort; Deborah Walder, author of the children’s books, Ice Critter and Shiny; and Kyrill Schabert, author of Best Seashore Nature Sites-Midcoast Maine and Best Nature Sites Midcoast Maine, Route 1 Corridor, Brunswick to Belfast, will read from their books, answer questions and have books to sell. Calling all merfolk, ghouls, and goblins! Join us for a late afternoon get together on October 30th at Otyokwa, a lakeside retreat on Pemaquid Pond. We’ll host a guided dip (if you’re curious about coldwater dipping!), sport funky costumes, chat about our swim
stories, and connect over our love of cold water! This afternoon will be just the ticket for a mellow Halloween celebration or pregame to the big Halloween night out.

This mermaid duo centers celebrations around cold water and good food, so we’ll be treating your tastebuds to vegetarian chili, cider, and s’mores. All our senses will come online; the warmth of chili, the spice of cider, and the sweetness of s’mores. With a cold swim planned and a hot fire pit to cozy up to after this early evening event will
bring you through a wide array of sensations!

The line up of the evening looks like:
2-4pm: Choose your own adventure: Costume Making, Swim Stories, Guided Dip intro
4:00pm Costume Parade (there will be prizes!) and Dip!
5:00-7:00pm Potluck dinner, Cider, and FIRE! (plus all the s’mores.)

Chill and Chilli, Warmth and cider, Friendship and Fire. We are coming together to play, to connect, to relax, to swim. Costumes, Dip, and Potluck are optional! Tickets are $25 and required. All are invited to an 8th Grade & Prospective Student Open House on Wednesday, November 2nd, which will begin in the Lincoln Academy Alumni Dining Commons at 6:30pm. Lincoln Academy holds this annual
event for 8th graders, prospective students and their families. During this session, faculty and students will provide an overview of academic and extracurricular programming and answer questions. Following brief welcoming remarks, current students will offer tours of the campus, and visitors will have the chance to informally meet teachers and representatives from each academic department.
