Considering his strong musical concept, formidable technical abilities, and a powerful work ethic, he is a mandolinist to watch.” Over the years Jacob has played with Ronnie McCoury, David Grisman, Chris Thile, John McGann, Fleck and other greats in the bluegrass world. He was a founding member of Joy Kills Sorrow, and then toured with Yonder Mountain String band before leaving to launch what has become the internationally touring Jacob Jolliff Band. Boothbay Region Historical Society presents Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage with by Anne B. Gass Wednesday, March 20 at 5:30 via Zoom
The Boothbay region’s involvement with the women’s suffrage movement runs deep. The Boothbay Region Historical Society’s
collections include a 1917 petition for women’s suffrage, signed by hundreds of local women. In fact, our museum was previously the home of Elizabeth Reed, who was active in the movement. She was no doubt inspired by the work of Florence Brooks Whitehouse, who summered on Squirrel Island.
From 1914-1920 Florence led Maine’s effort to win voting rights for women, battling conservative views of women’s roles and the political intrigues that sought to keep them in the home and out of the voting booth.
Join Maine Author Anne B. Gass on Zoom as she shares the inspiring story of her great-grandmother. The talk is based on her book, Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage, and is accompanied by slides of historic photos.
Please note: this is a virtual presentation only. Pre-registration is required to access the Zoom link. A link to the recording will also be sent after the event to those who register.
This is a FREE event, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Ocean on Tap is an informal, ocean-centric speaker series organized by researchers from the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and hosted by Footbridge Brewery in Boothbay Harbor. Our goal is to bring people of the community together over the fascinating world of the ocean. This month’s speaker is Dr. Sarah Douglas who will be sharing all about the surprising diversity of life in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. At these events, speakers will share their corner of expertise in the ocean, and attendees are encouraged to ask questions.
This event takes place right after Footbridge Brewery’s weekly happy hour and is free and open to the public. Upcoming events in the series will take place on April 18 and May 9, same time and location.
