Galician Piper Extraordinaire! He plays the gaita, the traditional Galician bagpipe, Galician flute, ocarina, Irish flute, whistle and low whistle. Honestly, we never thought we’d be able to bring Carlos back to our stage. He last played at the Opera House before the pandemic, and since then travel and visas have been especially challenging for European performers interested in touring the US. We are thrilled to announce the return of this beautiful act with his band – Jon Pilatzke, Pancho Alvarez and Xurxo Nunez. Don’t miss this concert!
Carlos Núñez is one of the world’s top bagpipers and an internationally acclaimed headliner on the Celtic/World Music scene. As a teenager he was discovered by Irish legends The Chieftains in his native Galicia, the Celtic region in North West Spain. He even became a honorary member of the band and they recorded a Grammy Award winning CD together, “Santiago”. SONY MUSIC has released his 12 albums to
date, that have sold 1 million copies since his debut in 1996, accumulating several Platinum and Gold CDs and DVDs, as well as 2 Latin Grammy nominations. They feature a wide variety of artists such as The Chieftains, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, and many more. He is classically trained on the recorder and plays with orchestras around the world, having performed at Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Musikverein in Vienna and the Royal Albert Hall in London. According to the BBC, “Carlos Núñez is one of the world’s most exciting, and most serious, musicians.”
If you’ve heard Carlos before, you are already eager to have tickets in hand. If you’ve never heard him, prepare yourself – he is a force of humanity to be delightfully reckoned with! Advance discount tickets $30, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed – Fri from 10-2). Regular tickets $35 online
at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.

Named ‘Best Group/Duo’ at the International Acoustic Music Awards, acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break more than a decade ago as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. It was there that they
were spotted by a music agent and thrust into the college touring scene, where Campus Activities Magazine would name them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.”
They’ve since performed more than a thousand shows across the US and have shared stages with Jason Mraz, Matt Nathanson, Train, and many more. They were a featured act at Australia’s National Folk Festival. Come listen to these rising stars – Ryan Green and Cameron Hood in their first Opera House performance! Advance discount tickets $20, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed – Fri from 10-2). Regular tickets $25 online at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.

The Bennewitz Quartet is one of the top ensembles on the international chamber music scene. After winning two prestigious competitions – Osaka Chamber Music and Festa 2005 and Prémio Paolo Borciani, Italy
2008, they quickly gained the acclaim of the critics. In 2019 the Bennewitz Quartet won the Classic Prague Award for the Best Chamber Music Performance of the Year. In the 2023/24 season the Bennewitz Quartet returns to numerous stages in Europe (Stuttgart, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Linz, Bilbao) and will make its debut in Klagenfurt, Darmstadt and Duisburg. The quartet will tour again in the United States and Canada, and will continue various concert projects in Czech Republic including its engagement at Dvořák’s Prague Festival.
Since 1998 the quartet bears the name of the violinist and director of a music conservatory in Prague, Antonín Bennewitz (1833-1926) who contributed greatly to the establishment of the Czech violin school. The most significant musicians who count among his disciples are Otakar Ševčík and František Ondříček and above all Karel Hoffman, Josef Suk and Oskar Nedbal who, under Bennewitz’s influence, formed the famous Bohemian Quartet.
Program:
Joseph Haydn: String Quartet Op. 77 No. 2 in F major
Bedrich Smetana: String Quartet No. 2 in D Minor
Antonin Dvorak: String Quartet No. 13 in G Major, Op. 106
