02/16/2025 | 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
The traditional ice harvest at Thompson Ice House in South Bristol will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16.
The free event attracts large crowds every year to participate or watch as volunteers of all ages cut large blocks of ice from Thompson Pond with antique tools. The volunteers then move the blocks along a narrow channel, up a wood ramp, and into the historic ice house.
Some of the ice is used to make ice cream for the ice house’s annual ice cream social on Sunday, July 6.
The event is free. Donations are welcome and go toward the preservation of the Thompson Ice House and pond.
The nonprofit Thompson Ice House Preservation Corp. manages the Thompson Ice House, a working museum dedicated to the methods of traditional ice harvesting in South Bristol. For more information, go to thompsonicehouse.com.

Thursday, February 20, 6pm
Footbridge Brewery
25 Granary Way, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538
To celebrate our first year, we will be holding an Ocean Trivia Night on February 20th, starting at 6pm at Footbridge Brewery. The trivia will cover a variety of topics centered on the ocean and highlight topics discussed throughout the year. Should be a fun time to expand your fun-fact list and test your ocean knowledge!
Haven’t been to Ocean on Tap yet? No problem at all! These questions will be quite broad, so no sweat if you hadn’t been to any or many Ocean on Taps this year!
Ocean on Tap is an informal, ocean-centric speaker series organized by researchers from Bigelow Laboratory and hosted by Footbridge Brewery in Boothbay Harbor. Our goal is to bring people of the community together over the fascinating world of the ocean. At these events, speakers will share their corner of expertise in the ocean, and attendees are encouraged to ask questions. If you would like to join our email list for reminders of upcoming events, contact us at oceanontap@gmail.com.

TRANS POETICS ARCHIVE @ PEACE GALLERY
On Friday, February 21st from 3-6pm, Peace Gallery will host the Trans Poetics Archive. The evening will begin with an
introduction to the exciting poetic form, the sestina facilitated by University of Southern Maine English Major, Vincent Herrington.
The sestina has served, historically, as a complaint: Does it still? – Stephanie Burt, critic, poet, transgender woman
This workshop is an introduction to the sestina, a poetic form defined not by rhyme or meter, but by an intricate pattern of repetition of a series of words. We will explore how the sestina provides an opportunity to examine how the meanings of words evolve through repetition and recontextualization, as well as finding ways to adapt this poetic form to fit our own voices. Since the sestina has no strict requirements for its rhythm or rhyme scheme, it’s more approachable for poets who tend towards free verse while still presenting an interesting creative challenge.
The workshop is followed by a Trans Authors Showcase featuring Woolwich author and Stonecoast MFA Alum, Heather Jones, and other Maine authors including another current Stonecoast MFA candidate, Calla Orion. Vincent Herrington will close the event with a feature reading of their work.
The event is free to the public and includes a reception with light refreshments.
