Barbara Shirley Lakin
Barbara “Barb” Lakin, 78, left us for a better place on June 8, 2024, after a long battle with diabetes. Barb’s parents, Donald Lakin and Gladys Charlton Lakin, met in Worcester, England during WWII. Barb was born there on March 21, 1946 and arrived in the U.S. with her mother 18 months later to join her father in Bath. The family moved to Sheepscot in 1954 where Barb grew up and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1964.
Troop 213 Court of Honor
Another successful Court of Honor was held Thursday, June 13 for Troop 213 at the Wells-Hussey American Legion Post 42 in Damariscotta to present rank advancements and merit badges.

Sheepscot River Knotweed Float Returns June 30
Grab a tube and join the Sheepscot Knotweed Project for a float down the beautiful Sheepscot River in Alna beginning after 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 30. Floaters will get a wood turtle-eye view of the problematic knotweed growing along the river bank, and many native plant and wildlife sightings too. All are welcome.
Nobleboro History Revisited Alewives for Haiti
During the five years of 1936-1940, all surplus alewives at Damariscotta Mills were packed whole, salted, and shipped in barrels to Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. The Haitian buyer was Brandt, Augusta, Nadal Co., whose trade name was Banco. As shown in the photo, the name Banco was stenciled on each barrelhead. Other information on the barrelhead was “Fancy Maine Alewives, Product of U.S.A., W. I. Oliver inspector.”
Coastal Rivers Seeks Volunteer Courtesy Boat Inspectors
The connected lakes and ponds of the Pemaquid River system are enjoyed by many as places to boat, fish, swim, and take in the sights and sounds of nature. To help protect them from the introduction of invasive aquatic plants, Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust participates in the courtesy boat inspection program in collaboration with Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Lakes Environmental Association.

Dr. Nathan Bates Witham Aug. 14, 1938 - May 28, 2024
Nathan Bates Witham, oldest child of the Rev. Cecil Witham and Afton Bates Witham Haggett was born on Aug. 14, 1938, in Rockland. He passed away peacefully after a short illness on May 28, 2024, in Holzminden, Germany, where he lived for many years. He was predeceased by his parents; and his two brothers, Barry and Robert “Jake.”
