Applications are currently being accepted at the Maine Community Foundation for the Lydia R. Laurendeau Scholarship Fund. Established in 2013, the Lydia R. Laurendeau Fund provides scholarship support to women who are seniors graduating from high schools in Maine who are pursuing post-secondary education in either science or engineering at a four-year university. There is a preference for applicants demonstrating an interest and/or actively participating in their Franco-American heritage.

Governor Directs Flags to Half Staff in Memory Of Deputy Sheriff Cole
As a sign of respect for the service and sacrifice of Somerset County Deputy Sheriff Cpl. Eugene Cole, who was killed in the line of duty Wednesday, April 25, Gov. Paul R. LePage has directed that all United States flags and State of Maine flags shall be flown at half staff immediately for at least three days, as well as on the day of Cole’s interment.

Youth Art Exhibit Opens May 5 in Wiscasset
The Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset will again provide a venue for promising artists from seven local schools with an exhibit, the Youth Art Exhibit, beginning Saturday, May 5. The gallery will be open weekends from noon-4 p.m. until the closing day for the show, Sunday, May 20. An opening reception will be held on May 5 from 2-4 p.m.

Basic Map and Compass Navigation with DRA
Anyone venturing into the woods can benefit from learning to navigate comfortably with a map and compass. On Saturday, April 28, Damariscotta River Association will offer a workshop on basic map and compass navigation and skills for “staying found,” as opposed to getting lost. Participants will learn how to read a USCGS topographical map and how to use a handheld compass. In addition, the class will cover declination, and how to obtain a bearing from the map and convert it to magnetic from true north.
