Local Theater Students Win National Award in Atlanta
Students from the Boothbay Region YMCA Y-Arts program won a Freddie G. Outstanding Production award and students Rick Hilscher and Jackie McLoon won a Freddie G. award for Outstanding Student Direction and Choreography at the 2018 Junior Theater Festival Atlanta, which took place Jan. 12-14 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. The Junior Theater Festival Atlanta united 6,000-plus students and educators from 130 educational musical theater groups representing 30 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Heartwood Presents ‘Wiley and the Hairy Man’
More than 30 third- through eighth-grade students from 10 Midcoast schools and home-schools, are spending their January afternoons rehearsing in the Parker B. Poe Theater at Lincoln Academy, in Heartwood Regional Theater Company’s fifth annual winter middle school production, “Wiley and the Hairy Man.”
School Choice in Alna
To accompany our many snow flurries this year, Alna has also seen a flurry of recent controversy over K-8 school choice. In my view, much of it has been fueled by incomplete information. Alna’s student numbers have certainly risen in recent years, but this rise has been driven almost entirely by a natural phenomenon: our town’s birth rate. Restricting K-8 school choice will have little impact on our education costs. Restricting our residents from having babies? Now there’s an idea that could make a difference!
Hike with PWA, DRA on Great Maine Outdoor Weekend
On Saturday, Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon, one can celebrate the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend with a hike at Crooked Farm Preserve in Bristol, led jointly by Pemaquid Watershed Association and Damariscotta River Association. Join the fun and hike or snowshoe, weather depending, on the beautiful trails along the Pemaquid River with Jim Hatch, PWA preserve steward, and DRA Education Director Sarah Gladu.

GSB PTO to Meet Feb. 1
The Great Salt Bay Community School PTO will meet on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. in John Cannon’s room. The PTO will provide a number of updates on PTO and school activities and will plan Winter Fest, an afternoon of skating (hopefully) and winter fun at Round Top Farm in Damariscotta on Sunday, Feb. 18 from noon-3 p.m. As always, child care will be provided.
