The pet pantry is open from 9-11 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, next on Dec. 6. Its mission is to assist people who, due to their economic circumstances, may be having trouble buying food for their cat or dog.

Lorraine Enid Smith, 91, of Newcastle, passed away at her home on the evening of Nov. 21 after a one-year battle with cancer. Born in Gary, Ind. in 1925 after her family relocated from Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of Ottie and Mabel (Aucoin) MacLaverty.
